Giancarlo Mazzoleni, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away on Tuesday May 19th, 2020, surrounded by his wife Rosa, and children, Carlo & Susanna, after a long battle with cancer. He was 67. The family would like to thank Dr. Naomi Haas particularly, not only for the immense amount of care she provided to him during his illness, but also for her support and encouragement to the entire family. Giancarlo is survived by his wife and children, as well as his mother, Maria Adele, 96, still living in his Alpine hometown in Italy. A memorial service will be organized once Covid-19 lockdown restrictions are lifted. Born in on the shores of Lake Como, Italy, Giancarlo first came to the United States to work as a ski instructor, and worked passionately as a Hardness Testing Engineer for the majority of his career. He found the time to serve on the board of the American Society for Testing and Materials and served as a delegate representing the United States to the International Standards Organization, which he continued to do after retiring. His colleagues have described him as a fantastic scientist and design engineer, having developed many testing instruments, providing a wealth of information to the hardness testing community and greatly advancing hardness measurement worldwide. Not one to remain idle, he spent the remainder of his retirement volunteering for the Consulate General of Italy. He received the honor of Knighthood in 2012 from the Italian Government, in recognition of his services to the nation and to the Italian-American Community in Philadelphia. A unique soul, he tried to help whenever he could and in his free time he greatly enjoyed playing tennis at the beach in the summer. Remembering him as an example of a life lived with purpose, righteousness and honesty to all those who had the joy of knowing him. He will be greatly missed. One of his proudest accomplishments was helping organize the Italy-Philadelphia Convergence on Kidney Cancer Conference for The University of Pennsylvania Abramson Cancer Center. In lieu of flowers, Giancarlo asked that Memorial donations be made in his name to the Mazzoleni Family Research Fund at the University of Pennsylvania. |
